Your pack record

Work through the stages in order. Open the linked plans to make the relevant observations, then return here to keep the result.

STAGE 1

Remove the identified deposit

Use soft materials and stop if material will not release gently or the finish is damaged.

Keep: Deposit location, gentle-removal result and the revealed finish condition.

STAGE 2

Check accessible water exits

Identify lower-edge openings and remove only visible surface debris.

Keep: Before/after accessible-opening observations and any trapped-water or rust concern.

STAGE 3

Record the finish-protection decision

On clean dry intact paint, use actual water beading and product compatibility to decide on nonabrasive wax.

Keep: Treated-area/protection record or a specific deferred-repair request; next ordinary-wash observation planned.

Review your next step

  • Deposit removal did not require scraping the finish.
  • Unidentified openings, trapped water or rust stay open for assessment.
  • Wax is applied only to compatible clean intact surfaces according to the product label.

Include the unresolved items so this record is useful at the next check or service visit.

Remove bird droppings before paint damage

Soften deposits without scraping the finish.

Vehicle: 2017 Mazda3 · US

Applicability and exclusions

  • Other model years and markets; imported Axela or diesel models; modified or aftermarket components with a different procedure.

Preparation, tools and materials

  • Park in a safe place away from traffic. Work with the vehicle stationary, parking brake set and ignition off unless a step explicitly calls for a parked functional check.
  • Is the deposit accessible on intact paint, with suitable soft cleaning materials?
  • Keep children and pets away from tools, fluids and coin cells. Never enter underneath the vehicle.
  • Soft sponge or soft damp tissue
  • Soft drying cloth
  • Clean water
  • Suitable nonabrasive automotive wax, used according to label

Record the evidence

Record whether the deposit released gently and whether the exposed finish is intact after rinsing and drying.

  • Deposit location
  • Softening and gentle removal result
  • Stain, etching, peeling or intact finish
  • Cleaned-area wax or deferred finish repair

Steps

  1. Remove bird droppings promptly; the manual explains that their acids can harm the finish.
  2. Use a soft sponge and water, or a moistened tissue when those are unavailable. Gently loosen the deposit rather than scraping it.
  3. Rinse away released material with water. Stop if removing it would require abrasive force.
  4. Dry with a soft cloth and inspect for remaining stain or finish damage.
  5. Wax the cleaned area following the automotive wax label and the manual’s nonabrasive finish-care guidance. Etching or peeled paint requires suitable finish repair.
  6. Record whether the deposit released gently and whether the exposed finish is intact after rinsing and drying.

Decision checks

Is the deposit accessible on intact paint, with suitable soft cleaning materials?

  • Yes — ready for this check: Continue with the steps, stopping if the real component differs from the manual.
  • Not yet / not sure: Preparation saved. Return when the condition is confirmed; leave the vehicle untouched.
  • Paint already peeling, etched damage or hardened material that will not release gently: Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.

What is visible after gentle removal?

  • Deposit removed, area rinsed / dried and intact finish protected: Did the deposit release without scraping, leaving intact finish suitable for wax?
  • Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.: Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.
  • I have only prepared the plan: Plan prepared; no physical maintenance result recorded.

Did the deposit release without scraping, leaving intact finish suitable for wax?

  • Deposit removed gently; finish intact and protection recorded: Deposit removed, area rinsed / dried and intact finish protected
  • The observation or repeat check is still incomplete: Plan prepared; no physical maintenance result recorded.
  • Bonded residue, etching or peeling remains: Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.

Recheck

At the next ordinary wash, is any stain or etched/peeling area still present despite deposit removal?

Stop and get help if

  • Paint already peeling, etched damage or hardened material that will not release gently
  • Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.
  • A part, label, connector or fastener differs from the cited manual; access requires raising the vehicle; you cannot identify the correct component.

Keep for service

Take the recorded observations, their dates and any actual work history to the service provider. Deposit remains bonded, etched damage or peeling: arrange finish assessment instead of scraping.

Check door drain openings after washing

Inspect accessible lower-edge drain holes so trapped water can escape.

  • Can the lower door / rocker openings be reached while standing, with no trim removal or vehicle lifting?
  • Keep children and pets away from tools, fluids and coin cells. Never enter underneath the vehicle.
  • Good lighting
  • Soft cloth
  • Clean lukewarm or cold water, used only on accessible exterior areas

Record the evidence

Record the opening and surface debris before/after; avoid treating an unidentified body gap as a drain.

  • Positively identified accessible openings
  • Visible surface debris before cleaning
  • Visible opening after cleaning
  • Trapped water, rust or inaccessible area

Steps

  1. Locate the accessible drain openings at lower door edges / rocker panels using the manual’s appearance-care guidance; do not assume every gap is a drain.
  2. Look for dirt at the visible openings without pushing tools deep into the door or removing trim.
  3. Remove loose surface dirt gently and use water only where accessible as part of ordinary exterior cleaning.
  4. Recheck that visible openings are clear. Mazda notes that clogged drain holes can trap water and cause rust.
  5. If water remains trapped, holes cannot be identified or rust is present, ask for body inspection; do not drill or enlarge an opening.
  6. Record the opening and surface debris before/after; avoid treating an unidentified body gap as a drain.

Decision checks

Can the lower door / rocker openings be reached while standing, with no trim removal or vehicle lifting?

  • Yes — ready for this check: Continue with the steps, stopping if the real component differs from the manual.
  • Not yet / not sure: Preparation saved. Return when the condition is confirmed; leave the vehicle untouched.
  • Standing water, rust damage, inaccessible holes or an unknown opening: Trapped water, corrosion or uncertain opening: arrange body inspection.

What was visible at the accessible drain openings?

  • Surface debris removed and visible openings clear: Are the identified openings visibly clear with no remaining trapped water or rust concern?
  • Trapped water, corrosion or uncertain opening: arrange body inspection.: Trapped water, corrosion or uncertain opening: arrange body inspection.
  • I have only prepared the plan: Plan prepared; no physical maintenance result recorded.

Are the identified openings visibly clear with no remaining trapped water or rust concern?

Decide when and where to renew paint wax

Use water behavior and surface condition to plan or complete nonabrasive finish protection.

  • Is the painted finish clean, dry and intact with a compatible nonabrasive wax identified?
  • Keep children and pets away from tools, fluids and coin cells. Never enter underneath the vehicle.
  • Soft clean cloth or supplied sponge
  • Clean drying cloth
  • Nonabrasive automotive wax and its label
  • Clean water

Record the evidence

Record where water stopped beading or a spot remover removed wax, and whether the surface was intact before treatment.

  • Observed water behavior
  • Clean/dry condition and damage observation
  • Nonabrasive wax and treated area
  • Final appearance or reason for deferral

Steps

  1. During an ordinary wash, note whether water still beads on the finish and whether a spot remover was used. Mazda calls for waxing when water no longer beads, and rewaxing areas where a remover took wax off.
  2. Rinse off dirt before gentle washing. Use a soft clean cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners; grit on an unwashed surface can scratch it.
  3. Wash and dry before waxing. Inspect for deep chips, exposed metal or finish damage; send those areas for suitable repair rather than concealing them with wax.
  4. For an intact area needing wax, follow the compatible product’s label; apply nonabrasive wax evenly with a supplied sponge or soft cloth, then wipe off with a soft cloth.
  5. Save the treated area and its final appearance, or record why protection was deferred. On a later ordinary wash, compare water beading without inventing a fixed wax lifetime.
  6. Record where water stopped beading or a spot remover removed wax, and whether the surface was intact before treatment.

Decision checks

Is the painted finish clean, dry and intact with a compatible nonabrasive wax identified?

  • Yes — ready for this check: Continue with the steps, stopping if the real component differs from the manual.
  • Not yet / not sure: Preparation saved. Return when the condition is confirmed; leave the vehicle untouched.
  • Exposed metal, peeling paint, trapped grit or unknown coating/product: Damage, grit or uncertain product compatibility: defer wax and arrange the appropriate finish care.

What finish-protection result can you record?

  • Intact clean area assessed; needed wax applied according to the product label or existing beading recorded: Is the treated or assessed surface intact, with compatible nonabrasive care and its result recorded?
  • Damage, grit or uncertain product compatibility: defer wax and arrange the appropriate finish care.: Damage, grit or uncertain product compatibility: defer wax and arrange the appropriate finish care.
  • I have only prepared the plan: Plan prepared; no physical maintenance result recorded.
